A priest, a rabbi, Camera+ 4.2.1, and a few developers walk into a bar…

Camera+ 4.2.1 is hot off the… presses. Here are the release notes:

So the jury’s in… based on all the feedback from our last update, you nice guys & gals made it loud and clear that you really appreciate that we continuously update Camera+ AND that we don’t try to nickel-and-dime you in the process. There’ve been the cries of, “devs gotta eat!” by a small handful, but we’re more of the mindset that some devs can stand to shed a few pounds (we’re no stranger to the allure of the Baconator ourselves, so we can empathize).

We’re very hard at work on Camera+ 5, which will have some really awesome things in it and will be a totally free update for you… but today we have a very nice, minor update that fixes some problems that some of you are having, especially if you have an iPhone 4S.

We also fixed a few sharing issues including one where the “Open In…” feature wouldn’t always work properly. And we added a bunch of options for what you can do with the links you get after you share photos.

In this update we took a little time put more spit-shine on some of the details that we missed during the big rush to get the iOS7ified version of Camera+ out in time for the iOS 7 launch. Our excuse for missing these things the first time around is that our eyes had been recovering from being blinded by all the bright, candy colors in iOS 7.

A little qualification

I’ve experienced both ends of the spectrum as a developer… I recall the early days where I’d earn less than $1,000 per month and essentially lived in a shack to make ends meet. And at the other end, I’ve made far more money than anybody needs to live. The bottom line is that absolutely none of this has any bearing on our customers.

If we, or any other developers aren’t able to make ends meet through selling our apps, the solution is neither to blame nor to screw over your customers. It’s more along the lines of: get better at what you do… or find some other work that better suits you.

Being able to get out of bed at noontime and work out of your home in your fluffy bunny slippers is a privilege, not a right. And you need to earn that privilege. A lot of developers seem to have lost that perspective these days and sound far more entitled than the people who support them by buying their apps that they accuse of being entitled.

If you’re a developer, it’d be nice if you actually thought all of this through in an objective way before just firing off the typical defensive, knee-jerk reaction.

Hugs,
~j

It’s when a dev decide to keep older paid version right until they post the new paid version, shitty. At least make the older app free (like Reeder) or disable it a couple months before releasing paid update.

App deleted. Pretentious snarky developers taking shots at other devs. Keep it classy and keep making your money with IAPs which you so conveniently forgot to mention.

I would rather pay for updates than have IAP. Happy to pay developers for good software but IAP often feel like you have to pay extra to unlock the full app.

I love this app. Has a photographer I’ve tried almost every big name free and paid app there is on the App Store over the years. But I use Camera + only . Great work . This app is amazing.

You’re missing out on a lot of money, don’t feel completely comfortable with it, so make yourself feel better by taking shots at other devs and pretentiously patting yourselves on the back. Congrats.

Just deleted your app. If you’re going to take shots at other developers, keep it to your blog, name names, and stand by your criticism. These passive aggressive release notes are childish.

Thank you for continuing to support and expand on a great app. I appreciate your IAP strategy. Camera+ is great without purchasing any extras, but allowing me to upgrade the app in the ways I want allows me to continue to pay you for an app that I love to use. Keep up the great work.
PS: I like that you have an opinion and voice it both on your blog and in your release notes. I may not even totally agree with you, but it is fun to hear your thoughts.
    Keep up the good work!

The great majority of customers will never hear about this bickering between devs going on. Being an observer since the infancy of the App Store, if a freemium works for you as developer, good. If paid updates is your thing, that’s good too. At the end of the day, developers are gonna get paid somehow. Tap tap tap has found a way to add features to their Camera+ and charge a mere $0.99 for each bundle of extra filters, that works for them. No need to rain on their parade for having found their niche. By the way, I find the pretentiousness absolutely hilarious. Why? Because it’s just simple sarcasm and lighthearted pokes at the haters, that’s why. If a developer is being sensitive about that, then a little self-reflection might be in order for them.

So you guys make enough with your IAP-laden app to provide infinite support for free. Good for you. Why take shots at developers who employ a different and entirely fair business model of not offering IAPs but instead charging a pittance for months of work?

    You twats.

Some debs don’t make as much as you, and that’s nice. If you want to work for free because you have enough, that’s fine. But don’t say jerky things, and then act surprised when people are oftened.

your app is gone from my phone. procamera is doing a better job anyway, and not being dicks at the same time.

Oh boy…the way you said it..simply wow..its far better to do some other jobs than developing an app if you cant support it for a couple of years. If your product is good. People will buy it. Those who’s blind just check the amount of iphones apple sell in a quarter. There are a lot of ways to monetize your app. Just check what successful developers do out there and learn from it or invent something of your own. Those who bash people for requesting free updates please remember its because of them you’ve a job. Well said John. Hats off to you.

You never know how written communications will be received. Your update notes are an example. I am sure it was a mistake and will not happen in the future. Independent developers are vital to the smartphone ecosystem.

Well i too just deleted your app. You just seem too OTT when it comes to such releases. I think you’re starting to lose sight of what your actual goal is here. Make your apps and move on. There is no need to act cool and slyly take a shot at your contemporaries. In short, im disappointed and FUCK YOU!

Wow… Where did all this hostility come from ?? Really I don’t see anything in his comments for anyone to get so upset over. Is everyone in this world now such a special snowflake that you get your feelings hurt by any three words in a row that don’t sing your praises ?

I do not understand the hostility in this dialog, I am a user and look forward to the version 5 letting me use the Sony Qx10 with my Iphone and Camera+!!

Camera+ has completely stopped working. For a couple days it went like this- I shoot a dozen pics and everything looks good. And later when I go to see the pics there are 1 or 2 only. A few days later, I take 2 pics and the app shuts off. I get 1 pic. And then today it would would like it was taking pics and then nothing. This sucks because I have missed a ton of fall pics I was hoping to have. And I miss the camera. But it won’t work. Please fix the bugs ASAP. I’m lost without it.

Hi, support does not seem to be getting bug reports since latest release. I have several images that I have spent a lot of time editing on iPad with latest camera+ and I can not export them with all the edits intact. It seems to ignore the selective erase/add brush effects for blur, exposure and many other filters, even though the preview looks correct on screen, once it tries to export, the image composites all effects equally ignoring any brush or erased edits I have made. I don’t want to loose all the edits so please advise on what needs to happen to get the photos exported as edited.

    Regards,

    Jeff

App quit working. When I try to take a picture the app completely shuts down.

I know this is a long shot, but this app on Windows Phone 8 would get a LOT of attention. Especially for Lumia users and our amazing cameras. You say you do what you do for the community, consider publishing JUST Camera + for WP8 and watch your sales soar.

PS. I made the switch to my Lumia 1020 after being an advanced iPhone user for 5 years. I am happy I made the switch.

Guys, we desperately need a Camera+ app for Windows store, but desperately…. What is the ETA?

Please finally make a dedicated Clarity app including some exclusive filters from Camera+ and release it as free?

Yeah. No camera features needed, only clarity and other filters. ‘Nuff said!
