Camera+ 2.2.1 available / 99¢ anniversary sale

We’ve just released Camera+ 2.2.1. Here are the release notes for it:

  • sharing via SMS
  • fixed an issue where people weren’t able to login to Facebook to share on it
  • improved launch time
  • performance enhancements
  • fixed crashing issues on older devices
  • various other bug fixes and improvements

Get it now in the App Store.

The main reason this release came out when it did was because of the Facebook issue mentioned above. It was affecting many people so it was somewhat of an emergency fix and cut our upcoming version 2.3 release a bit short. This Facebook bug actually also started happening a few weeks ago but Facebook fixed the issue on their end then. But we weren’t so lucky this time.

SMS and the unlevel playing field

One of the major features that was slated for version 2.3, but we left it in here in 2.2.1 is SMS sharing. Note that we’re sharing photos via SMS and not MMS and the way that we’re doing this is to upload your photos to our server and then setup an SMS text message with a relatively secure URL for your photos.

This isn’t a perfect solution by any means, but our hands are tied because Apple doesn’t currently provide 3rd-party developers with a way to create MMS messages with attachments, unfortunately. Apple’s own apps are free to do this, though. Hopefully they’ll level the playing field someday.

Upcoming: version 2.3

Without giving away any details prematurely, I’ll just say that the upcoming version 2.3 update of Camera+ is going to make a lot of you very happy for a few reasons. It’s a pretty major update and it’s definitely taking a while to get this one finished. But sit tight because some dishes simply taste better when they’re slow-cooked.

99¢ 1-year anniversary sale

To celebrate the 1-year anniversary of the release of Camera+, we’ve put it on sale for a very limited time. If you’re one of the few people who read this blog and you still don’t own a copy, here’s your chance to grab it for the ridiculously low price of 99¢.

And I’ll be taking a look back at Camera+’s first year shortly. With WWDC going on this week, I’ve been living in Chaoticville so I’m a bit behind schedule.

    I hope you’ll be able to batch import pictures from camera roll into camera+ and batch upload pictures to facebook (+ have the option to upload them in full quality) instead of uploading them one by one, this is gonna be time-saving (something like instagram app would be great).
    Anyways, I LOVE your app, thank you so much !

    Now that Apple uses it in iOS 5, will 2.3 see the return of the volume-shutter button? And maybe you could use XMPP or whatever iMessage is using to share photos?

    Hopefully, 2.3 will cross out some of my wish list: volume shutter, video recording, simplified lightbox UI (it’s an inconsistent maze), keyword tagging and rating, iPad 2 universal.

    So will Camera+ bring back the volume button as shutter button now that Apple used it?

    My wishlist for v2.3:

    - Batch add and save into the editing portion of the app.

    - I love the Clarity feature, but sometimes the effect is a little over done for certain images, I would LOVE to see a slider to tone down the overall effect like the rest of the filters in the app.

    - Shooting video.

    - Volume Snap brought back maybe? Not that big of a deal for me though.

    - Maybe another IAP for another set of rad filters? :)

    That’s all I got for now, hope to see some of these requests make it into the app sometime, ESPECIALLY the first two! :D

    Josh reflects my thoughts as well, and it skuld be nice to adjust curves and maybe sharpen/soften?!

    My wishlist:

    1. red eye reduction;
    2. ability to make panoramas;
    3. more photos fx;
    4. a larger social experience at campl.us, with tags for photos and the possibility to make friends…;
    Keep up the good work! Can’t wait to get 2.3!

    Actually, I really adore the current SMS implementation because MMS can be expensive for both you and your friends. My carrier charges 45p (75c) for sending; others charge for sending AND receiving.

    The link system lets your chums decide if they want to open the pic using their phone’s regular signal (3G/GPRS, etc) or wait till they have WiFi coverage.

    For me, that’s the best possible implementation.

    Just picked this sweet little app up last night but when I went to import into iPhoto – nothing. Am searching for instructions on this. Need my pics in my computer. Thanks.

    I’ve not gotten any response about going back to the previous version of Camera+ (2.0 I guess). It worked perfectly with my iPhone 3gs. This new version just crashes and is worthless unless I unclick all the benfits; and even then it mostly crashes. HELPppppppp ppppplease!!!!!

    Please add batch pic import… I know you want us to always use your app, but still, lockscreen only allows apple camera. This would be really handy. And don’t forget, we love your app!!!
