Camera+ 3 is here!

First off, a little milestone…

We’ve just hit the 7 million sales mark for Camera+. A huge thanks goes out to all of you who’ve supported us by purchasing Camera+!

And without further ado, allow me to introduce you to Camera+ 3. It’s the biggest and best version of the app ever. We’ve slaved over this update for you for many, many months and we truly hope you enjoy using it nearly as much as we’ve enjoyed bringing it to you.

Here’s what’s new in it…

App icon

The very first thing you’ll notice in Camera+ 3 is its shiny, new icon. It’s essentially the same Camera+ icon that you’ve grown to know and love… but better and much more polished.

Here’s a back-to-back comparison of the old and new icons so you can see the difference…

app icon

Dramatically improved sharing

dramatically improved sharingThere are two main improvements here… The first is that you can now share to multiple services, or even multiple accounts on the same service, all at the same time. The second big thing that you’ll notice with sharing is the increase in speed. It’s now faster than ever to share your photos online.

Multiple photo library import

multiple photo library importWe’re introducing a great new feature where you can import multiple photos from your photo library all at once. And we’ve added several fine touches to the import panel. Large thumbnails, zooming to view your photo large, and photo info will help ensure that you’re choosing exactly the photos you want.

Please note that the import button is now the + button located in the top-right corner of the Lightbox. And there’s a small bug when your Lightbox is empty and it still references the old button.

workflowsSometimes you want to shoot a bunch of pics in a row without having to think about things like editing and sharing. And sometimes you want to do just the opposite and edit and share each pic you take, right after you take it. Workflows easily provide you with the flexibility to do it either way.

Focus & exposure locks

focus & exposure locksNow you can lock the focus and exposure of the camera, independently of each other. Photographers looking for the utmost flexibility in shooting will love this new feature because it enables all kinds of creative ways of taking awesome shots.

“Bokeh?! I hardly know her!”

APIsWe’ve created a few comprehensive APIs for Camera+. These APIs enable people to integrate Camera+ into other apps and to create web services that make use of the many, many photos that have been shared by Camera+ users.

web widgets APIThe first part of the API is web widgets. Very easily add the photos you share with Camera+ to your own website.

app integration APINext, there’s the app integration API. Use Camera+ functionality to integrate high-quality photo shooting, editing, and sharing in your own iOS apps.

web sharing APIAnd thirdly, there’s the web sharing API. Create web, mobile, and desktop apps that enable browsing Camera+ user’s shared photos in unique and interesting ways.

Several prominent developers have already integrated Camera+ into their apps via these new APIs. Check-out the WordPress, Tweetbot, Twitterrific, Foodspotting, and Twittelator Neue apps in the App Store to see these APIs in action.

Our lead programmer / all around fine chap, Good Karl, will be posting many more details about the APIs here shortly. He and Terrorist Karl spent a lot of time polishing them and writing-up some great documentation so that you can incorporate Camera+ functionality into your apps as easily as possible. But if you’re anxious to delve into the APIs immediately, you can visit now and get going on making cool things.

Improved Lightbox UI

improved Lightbox UIWe’re a bit obsessive when it comes to user interface and user experience. With Camera+ 3, we’ve reworked several details of the Lightbox to make it even more usable. It’ll take a couple of seconds to get used to the changes but we’re completely confident that you’ll love these improvements almost immediately.

Please note that we’ve removed the Paste button from the bottom toolbar as it was a fairly seldom used feature by users. The paste function still exists, though… simply tap & hold in any empty area in the Lightbox to have the Paste button appear.

And as I mentioned above, the import from Photo Library button is now the + button located in the top-right corner of the Lightbox.

Create web link

create web linkMany of you used to use the SMS sharing feature (now renamed to Message) for passing web links along to others. Now we’ve got a much better, easier, and dedicated way of doing it.

Tuned Clarity

tuned ClarityOften imitated but never duplicated, Clarity is one of the things that makes Camera+ what it is. And now it’s even better, especially if you’re using an iPhone 4S.

VolumeSnap setting in menu

VolumeSnap setting in menuVolumeSnap is our birthright. That is all.

Status bar in Lightbox

In previous versions of Camera+, we didn’t display the status bar (you know… that thingy with the clock, battery level, etc at the top of your screen) when you were in the Lightbox. Well, that’s all changed with this version! Never again miss picking your kids up at soccer practice because you were editing photos and had no clue what time it was.

Improved performance

We’ve gone through painstaking steps to improve performance in several parts of the app. It all feels a lot more fluid now. But don’t just take our word on it… try it yourself and see how much nicer it is now.

notificationsFind-out about Camera+ updates, news, and contests. We’ve implemented notifications so they’re not intrusive and they’re opt-in only.

Lotsa bug fixes

We’ve identified and fixed several bugs in Camera+. Thanks to all of you who’ve reported any issues you’ve experienced.

Various other subtle, but significant enhancements

“Beware of the person who can’t be bothered by details.”
— William Feather

And that’s about it for now. We really do hope you enjoy Camera+ 3 and that you’re looking forward to all that’s in store for the future of the app.

Thanks again to all of you for your support!

Sorry to say this but me and my friends all found this update to be lukewarm at best. We had much higher hopes for new features and new filters, given that the wait was so long.

    Sharing? Could always do that…

    Workflow? Meh…

VolumeSnap settings? Menubar in lightbox? Notifications? Meh, meh, meh.

When I personally looked at the new CameraAwesome I said to myself — ‘this will really motivate Camera+ to get some new features out of their doors’. Had my hopes high when 3.0 was announced, but this was a major anticlimax.

I’ve been lovin’ Camera+! I took too many pixx last night @ SXSW with it! It’s a winner! Just need a ‘Share to Instagram’. Or did I miss it? Thanks! -M- PS Birthright. I see what you did there ;)

Every effort for improvement is worthy to be recognized, great update! I’m really looking forward to a video function with direct access to the photo library to replace the default iPhone camera app…unless it happens Camera+ is just a high quality camera toy. I still love it and use Camera+ than other photo editing app but pls video and direct photo library integration from the light box!!

Can we please get Camera+ as a Universal app now that the new iPad has a decent rear-facing camera.

    9:57am, March 14, 2012

I was hoping it will be possible to easily combine filters and effects without the need of “committing edits” before adding another effect :-(

Anyway still the best camera app available. Don´t leave home without it.

I agree that this isn’t an update really worthy of being called version 3. The feature list hasn’t really grown, youve just tweaked what you already had. Don’t get me wrong, this is a good thing and youve done a great job, but you have to careful of people’s perception. You go from version 2 to 3 and we expect BIG NEW things.

Don’t waste time with video. I can’t understand people’s obsession with it. This is a camera app, not a video app. Why would you want to apply any of the photo filters to a video?! Madness.

What you do need to more flexibility is the settings of the filters. A simple intensity slider isn’t enough.
The captions are great but need more configuration. Some of the captions are so small to be useless, and others have very unclear fonts.
    More borders!
Better rotating. Not just 90degree steps.
    Landscape support.

But all in all still the best camera app. Just keep the NEW features coming.

A photo collage feature would be awesome, like Diptic or PicFrame.

    10:26am, March 14, 2012

@BryanH The reason myself and most people I know with camera+ want video doesnt have to do with filters: its a space issue. There are only so many spaces in the dock and we only want on for visuals. Panoramas are planned, but i want to be able to quickly access video or my camera with one click.

    10:27am, March 14, 2012

I can see a LOT of work has gone into this update, well done!!

But as a long time loyal Camera+ user, I’m more than disappointed that there were no photo editing improvements, or even a new filter to ring in the new major version. There are some *really* good camera apps coming out, that are hot on your heels, you know that huh…!

So I’d like to be wowed please, and I know you can do it, you’ve been leading the pack for so long with some frankly awesome shiz… don’t forget about the fun stuff eh?

    1. Swipe to change filters etc
    2. Apply multiple filters
    3. Straighten photos after shooting
    4. New filter/s, new other stuff in photo editing.

I await patiently (but not for long).

    Yours very sincerely,
    Camera+ fan and addict

I would also like to see an option for video as well. For me it would just eliminate the need to open a 2nd app to shoot video. Often I am using the camera and think I would like to get a little video to go along with whatever photos I am taking and using the default app on my phone, it’s just a quick touch of a button and I am there ready to film. There’s no need to apply filters or anything to video, just a means of accessing video through Camera+ would be great.

  14. klyonrad
    1:19pm, March 14, 2012

Pleeeeeeease add a “real” HDR ability!
The clarity filter _after_ making the photo cannot compare even close to the HDR photos.

that is the main reason why I still have to use the native :-(

  15. Hansa
    3:13pm, March 14, 2012

I like the update, but I’m with the others on video option. Just basic video, no need for filters. That would really replace the stock camera app.

And I wish for sharing to Picasa in the future, but maybe the new API for other apps will solve that? I’d then like MyPics or PhotoSync apps to be included. Fingers crossed!
But you seldom answer in these comments, so looking forward to the next update!

    12:04am, March 15, 2012

I’m thrilled to be able to export to multiple accounts on same service!

To be honest, I can understand the want for more filters & frames, but there’s plenty of apps for that stuff- I’d prefer the camera app to stay lean and fast.

Thanks for the hard work! All in all a nice update. My only remark is that I wish that Clarity came with a slider to control how much of the effect you want. Such a slider would make it useful on all photos instead of some like it is now. One can only hope ;)

Thank you, great update! Just a question: when creating web links and sharing via email, the app says that either me or the recipient will be able to delete photos shared using web links, by visiting the link. But if I visit the link, no delete option is to be found. Was this forgotten? I’d like to delete things if I don’t want them to be shard anymore. Thanks :)

    3:48am, March 15, 2012

For me you have ruined the sharing, it now pops up every time when I click on share asking me for access to Twitter Accounts, so I click on don’t allow (as I don’t use twitter) but it pops this up every time, I told it I don’t want to give it access to Twitter, so respect that and don’t bug me about it every time. And then when I go to share it on Facebook it wants permission to “manage my pages”, which I don’t want it to do, these are for my business and I don’t want it having access to these, so once again I click on don’t allow and then the app crashes, so I can no longer share on facebook.

Camera+ is great. But update3 is not good. The clarity effect is to much strong/hard. I can’t use it anymore. Can’t this be adjusted? Is there a way to go back to previus version?

I used to love Camera+ until I “upgraded” to version 3. Since doing so, I have not been able to connect with Facebook and can’t share my photos. It also is slow to load when I open the app. This used to be my favorite camera app. Now, it is essentially useless. I’m very disappointed.

As a camera ienjoy to use camera+ but after this ‘uprade’ i can’t connect to facebook ( many times wants me enter my e-mail and password )and can’t share my photos. i hope u will solve this problem as soon as posibble..

When I save picture to camera roll it deletes from lightroom. How can I solve this problem?

  29. Jhon

The only solution I found is to press “undo” in the bottom of screen after you “save to camera roll” - this recovers picture.

  30. Alfred Thorpe
    12:54am, March 26, 2012

Is it just me or is the optimized quality setting not working for others as well (after the update). The photos remain as very large files and saving to my camera roll is really slow.

  31. feng
    10:03pm, March 28, 2012

how to import multiple photos from camera roll? I can still just select one picture at a time.

  32. Robert
    2:39pm, April 2, 2012

I have been a loyal user of the app and have even purchased a few copies for friends.

However, photos no longer save in optimized resolution! This was the main reason I bought the app. It saves a TON of space on my 16GB iPhone 4 (running iOS 5.1). Now I’m having to delete photos, which plain sucks.

  33. Rob
    8:32am, April 14, 2012

I used the Create a Web Link and it uploaded the picture but I can’t find a way to delete the picture - I was just testing out the app and I’d like to get it deleted. I created the web link before linking to Twitter.

Yep, problems here too. Twitter posts ultra nicely, but both Facebook and flickr are giving errors.

    “Facebook said: failed creating form…”
    “Flickr upload failed: request failed….”

If I click retry, there pops the facebook login page, which doesn’t seem to work. If I try the alternate login, Safari says that it can’t process the result page.

Love camera+… Wish there was a way I could easily delete all. I’m one of those users that takes a bunch of shots and then edits later. Not all of my shots make it to the editing phase, which leaves me with a bunch if unwanted shots. Any chance we could see something like this soon?
