Convert 1.0.1: in review / Holy shit!

in review

Convert 1.0.1 was just submitted to Apple and is now in review:

What’s new

  • fixed incorrect conversion values
  • added Philippine Pesos to currency (I feel like we’re being pranked… we’ve had about a million requests for it so we put it in this update… more currencies to follow in our next update, which will be more substantial than this “quick-fix” one)
  • added milliliters to volume
  • fixed typos
  • minor graphics revisions

And now onto the “holy shit!” part of this post…

3rd!

Convert has blazed up the charts over the past two weeks since we launched it to currently rank as the #2 top paid app in the US App Store. Over 40,000 Just under 50,000 copies have been sold worldwide so far in the short time that it’s been out. To say the least, we’re all completely delighted with how much people are into the app, especially its UI! I feel like all our efforts in creating it were completely worth it.

Here’s how the sales look for the first two weeks (the craziness on the right side coincides with it breaking into the Top 10):

daily sales

Note:

I was waiting around for yesterday’s sales to be posted so I could include them in the chart but they’re delayed. Hence the missing slot at the end. We were originally at #3 when I wrote the post, but in the span of waiting for the sales report, we jumped up to #2 and I had to redo parts of the post to reflect that. Trust me, I’m not complaining about this. :D

In any case, it’s now approaching 7am… and I’m hella-tired. I’m going to set the post live and update the chart with yesterday’s sales when I wake up.

Update: Yesterday’s sales are now out so I updated the chart to reflect them. Rising up to #2 brought in almost 9,000 sales for the day. This puts the total for the two weeks to just under 50,000. Wow.

We’ve obviously got our sights set for #1. We’ll see if we can get there…

Of course, we could cheat a bit and just pretend that only the iPod touch exists since Camera Genius isn’t available for it.

I just want to take a second to send out a huge thanks to all the incredible members of the team who worked really hard to make Convert such a great app… Wolfgang for doing such amazing design work and for being one of my favorite people ever to work with, Scott for all his great UI ideas (most of the way the custom picker works was dreamed up by him), and Kevin for doing such a superb job with the programming (and also for his awesome idea for the Convert design evolution video).

We’ve gotten a ton of feedback and although we’re not able to directly reply to each and every one of you, I want to assure you that we’re definitely listening and we’ll be making many more improvements to Convert over time. Thanks also goes out to all of you for helping us have such an amazing launch!

It’s very refreshing to see great apps at the top of the charts rather than endless “Touch to Fart” or “Camera Zoom Even Though It’s Not Really a Zoom” apps. Congratulations for the sales so far, and I hope to see you guys at #1 very soon!

Congrats on the success of your app!

But uhh… I think you should install those 38 updates on other applications, don’t you? haha

Congrats on the success of Convert! I have it, I love it. On a more serious note…whoever owns the iPhone that is being used to screenshot the top 10 should consider updating a few of those 38 available apps!

Please, add the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belarusian_ruble (“Belarusian ruble”) to currency. Please, please, please! It’s hard to live without it =)

Could you make the currency conversions run on a XML frame where the user could simply download a new XML file via a web service if a new one is available?

This would make updates to certain things simpler for the user and you guys wouldn’t have to submit to the AppStore for approval

    just a thought

The Graphical element and the easiness are so wow. I just wonder is it possible to add Currencies other than those in the App.

    Keep up the good work

Love the app but I don’t get to use it often due to the fact that my currency (Costa Rican colon, currently) is not supported. Currency conversion is the primary use case for me. Hope 1.0.2 will resolve this and be available soon!

The jump of course is the Gruber Effect – a link to the video of the app’s UI development was posted on his blog on the 25th.

Wow, 40,000 sales… thats more than $26,000 (USD) in two weeks. Not bad. Congratulations. Lets hope that Convert has a steady place as the premier unit converter for the iPod. Beautiful app, deserves every sale it gets!
    Request: Disable categories/units/calculator.

Great app, I work in construction, and have to transform from inches to mm, yards to m and feet, and acres to hectares on a regular basis.

Ive downloaded at least 4 converters, including babelfrog, units, the converter and yours, you blew them all out of the water.

IS there a chance I could request a feature.
It would be really cool to add a steel weight calculator for construction.

that would be volume in area in mm^2 multiplied by lenght in m multiplied by steel density wich is 0.0078 kg/mm^2 x m

    so for example a 16mm steel bar weights 16×16 x 3,141592/4 x Lengh in metters x 0,0078.

And then i can transform into other weights. I ususally need an RPL calculator or spreadshit. it would be awesome if you can come up with some way to do this fast.

    Hi,
    Nice apps, thanks.

Feature requests : in the area list, can you add arpent (it’s still used a lot in French Canada, specially for people who buy / sell piece of lands) it’s hard to translate…

1 (square) arpent = 32,400 French square feet = about 3419 square metres

    Thanks.

While we’re making conversion requests, can you add minutes/kilometre and minutes/mile to speed? They’re pretty much the standard way to measure running speed.

Glad to see a rapid fix in 1.0.1 to the UK Gallons/Litres conversion factor I wrote about a couple of days ago.
I still urge you to include a Fuel Consumption converter for Miles Per Gallon(MPG) to Litres/100km.

Very Recently, there has been a good deal of litigation by the
FTC against bloggers and website promoters
for not stating their advertising revenue, or potential
    relationships with advertising agencies.

What are your thoughts about how this could potentially hurt
    the blogging community?
