Introducing Camera+ 4!

Camera+ 4

Since WWDC and Apple’s preview of iOS 7, we’ve been crazy-hard at work on reinventing Camera+. I’m very pleased to announce that today, along with the official release of iOS 7, we present to you the next major update of the app as Camera+ 4!

Camera+ 4

We’ve revamped the entire Camera+ design and given it a brand new, modernized look. Because iOS 7 is so radically different than past versions of iOS, there was the risk that Camera+ would lose its essence. But I’m happy to say that through a lot of hard work, we’ve achieved the perfect balance where Camera+ fits-in very nicely with iOS 7, and still looks and feels like Camera+.

♫ Still skeuy after all these years. ♫

Having the opportunity to redo every area of the app gave us the chance to streamline several things. For you advanced photographers, one of the first things you’ll notice is that the shooting locks (focus / exposure / white balance) work a lot more intuitively and are much simpler to access now.

Camera+ 4 isn’t just a reskinning of the app. We’ve added several new, big things…

Exposure compensation

Exposure Compensation

Now you can adjust for overly dark or bright lighting situations before you even shoot your photos.

Square cropping

Square Crop

Square crop in the viewfinder enables you to shoot in the popular format without any extra editing steps.

New sharing and printing options

We’ve added a “Open in…” item to the sharing panel so you can now send your photos to other apps like Instagram, Dropbox, Evernote, and any other app that supports opening images from other apps.

And you can now wirelessly print your photos right from Camera+ on your AirPrint printer.

An iOS 7 exclusive. Send your photos to your friends and family with minimal fuss & muss.

As always, this big update is free to all Camera+ users. Because we love you.

BREAKING NEWS: Right after we submitted Camera+ 4, we realized that the newly added “report a bug” feature crashes in iOS 6. This is what we get for hiring a Vice-Minister of Irony. Anyway… there’s a 4.0.1 update coming out very shortly that addresses this and a bunch of other little things.

Great to see an iOS 7 version of the once No.1 photo app.
BUT, sorry to say, there is nothing revolutionary to find nor big feature surprises for me.
Still no video, still same old filters, frames, still no highres burst mode…
For me it looks nothing more than an iOS 7 updated UI with small fixes. There are some other fantastic and innovative competitors/apps around worth to check out.

    Great new release.
Finally one camera app to rule them all.
One suggestion, when handing over the pic to Instagram, it would be better to start off at the “resizing” screen on Instagram (like when you import something from your camera roll to Instagram).
This would give me more control over how the pic on Instagram will look like.

Excited to give this a run out. For me, video isn’t a requirement, but could be fun to add burst mode, and maybe even a cinemagraph option. Keep up the good work guys.

The update looks great but is there finally complete feature parity between iPhone and iPad?

    Also- BURST MODE! (please)

  5. Michel
    7:01am, September 18, 2013

Okay, video is not the killer option, agreed.
Cinemagraph would be awesome and what about live filters and custom fonts for captions? All this and
it is my No.1 again :) ….oh and a iOS7 styled homescreen icon guys!!

Nice update, though I’d still like to see some standard image property sliders! (in the iPhone version) Brightness, contrast, gamma, levels, hue, etc… Even if in some advanced button section.
Nice to see sliders, layers, and ordering for the filters though. I’ve been using Tadaa for its basic image adjustments, including fully customizable blur filters (linear, ellipse). That’s about the only thing that app has over Camera+ now (and Camera+ has SO much over Tadaa, especially in the UI friendliness)
Nice work. Just a few more features to add ;)

After all the iOS 7 trash talks (vs. more civil constructive criticisms), I expected more from Camera+ 4, which essentially amounts to iOS 7-style UI makeover for majority of the users. Since the update is a free one, I am not exactly complaining, but then again, I didn’t trash talk iOS 7 either.

Are you ever going to be available for android?I just switched to the galaxy ..your app was my favorite,I miss it so much i used it every day….

    1:56pm, September 18, 2013

Its funny that Lisa Bettany gets so much credit for “creating” this app, yet her only contribution are the filters which are easily the single biggest problem with this fine app.

Is there any way the Camera+ team will hire someone who actually knows how to make unique and pro-looking filters? These are just outdated and amateurish.

    Great Job,

Just tested it on my iPhone 4(iOS6), it loads significantly faster than the previous version, which was getting quite irritating.

    Stupid as always

    2:55pm, September 19, 2013

If this app were to be purchased for one reason and one reason only, it would be for its Clarity feature folks. Nothing compares.

And there is a burst mode for people posting previous comments.

Fantastic! I love this app and all the ways it’s superior to the native camera on iPhone.

Also, I turned off automatic updates in the app store so I can still read your release notes.

You should’ve straighten that film icon rather than slanting it diagonally.

In the 4.0.1 update, I get a black screen while in camera mode. When I take a picture, the picture is what the lens was aimed at so the camera is seeing things, but not showing them to me.

I want to delete the app and restore the old version from the computer. Will deleting the app from the phone make all the pictures saved in it disappear?

  18. Lucy
    8:33am, September 22, 2013

I downloaded the most recent update—with which, until now I’d delighted, recommending it widely—and now the screen opens black or with the most recent *past* image. I’ve tried everything but Restore the entire 4S, which I should not have to do. Please help, thanks!

I am using iphone5 with iOS6. But i got a black screen when shooting after upgrade. Please fix this.

  20. Bryant
    5:04pm, September 22, 2013

When I open the app I have only a black screen and nothing else. Will take a picture but doesn’t show what you are shooting. Please fix. On 4.0.1.

  21. Stefan
    2:09am, September 23, 2013

It’s a real Bummer, still no geotagging … still no highres burst mode. For me, you are losing your pole position in iOS photo apps.

  22. Elaine
    8:40am, September 23, 2013

Well… After updating to the latest version, the app crashes when I tried to access the report bug button from the menu.

My main gripe, however, is that the updated app goes black (black screen) when I launch it, whether it is using front facing or rear facing camera. Please fix it because I haven’t been able to use it since I updated the app. I’m using iPhone 4S.

  23. Clare

I’m also getting the black screen camera and crashes on iOS 6 with an iPhone 4S. Please, please, please fix this ASAP!

Focus, exposure and wb have only locked and unlocked options on iphone 4 otherwise iphone 4s it comes with a gradual bar to ajust saturation, wb before take a picture.

When iso exposure option is enabled on settings, the app should map and show iso, focus aperture and obturation speed. But the bad is this option doesnt appear on iphone 4

  34. Harlan

Exposure compensation is terrific. Happy you were finally able to include this feature. Keep up the good work.

Is it possible to mute the shutter sound on an iphone 5s using camera+? Phones produced/purchased in some countries have a very loud shutter sound that cannot be muted the way that phones in the US can be muted.

  42. What is Wrong With You People?!
    2:43pm, January 23, 2014

OK, so the issue of getting a black screen when starting up the app has been relayed to you guys. Where is the fix?? You’ve always seemed so responsive and have great communication, but this latest bug (that renders my app completely useless) hasn’t even been acknowledged!

What is wrong with you people!?

  43. Craig
    5:21am, February 5, 2014

Used to love this app but the black screen makes it completely unusable. Seems as though this has beengoing on for a long time.
    Any word on a fix?

I am getting a black screen every time I start the camera+ app now. iOS 6. I see others are getting it too. Until this is fixed I cannot use it as I miss just about every ‘quick’ shot I try to take.

Please give us an update on this issue.

    Thank you.

I’m switching to Android tablets and phones because Apple doesn’t use the best camera hardware anymore. My Samsung Note Pro 12.2 needs a camera app and I’m looking for a Sony xperia z2 phone, has a 20.7mp camera sensor, will you please release these apps for Android? Thanks

  54. Legolas
    5:53am, May 20, 2014

Seriously guys - I’ve looked at the pro’s and con’s of getting the Samsung Galaxy S5 vs Iphone 5S and I almost stayed on the Apple side, just so that I can keep on using Camera+.
I’ve had it for years now and would DEF. pay for it in the Play store.
Please write the Android version…read the comments, I’m obviously not the only one who is going to miss you.

As a professional landscape photographer and an android/windows user, is there any plans of a port to android? Think of the bank you’d make tapping into the 80% of the smartphone market you’re missing out on currently. I’d buy camera+ for sure!!!! I’m tossing up between an s5 or a g3 for my next handset, which both have class-leading cameras. IPhone is NOT an option for me.

Camera+ is unbeatable, but I need to be on android these days. PLEASE! I have to lug around my dslr again just because I’ve stopped using my phone as a camera.
