Making iPads extra magical: behind the scenes of the X-ray iPad

When it came time time to pick a prize for our launch contest celebrating Camera+ 2.0 we really wanted to do something special. We planned on giving out iPads, but we struggled for a while on how we could really make them extra magical (and revolutionary). Eventually we came up with the idea of laser engraving the back of the iPad with line art that illustrated what the construction inside would look like, almost like an X-ray. We finally sent them out to the winners recently, and I’m happy to share some pictures with you guys.

If you can’t tell from the photos it’s extremely hard to capture the back of an iPad on camera, let alone an iPad that’s been laser engraved. These really look different from every angle, and almost every time you move them you’ll notice new details in the engraving.

Turning a concept into art

In order to turn our vision of an X-ray into actual line art we recruited William Bart to design the laser engraving for the back of the iPads. I can’t express how thrilled we were with the illustration he sent back to us. It’s insane how much thought he put into things such as speaker placement, connecting cords and BATTERIES. The art we ended up with was really detailed, but the folks at In a Flash Laser did a terrific job bringing them to life! (thanks Sara!)

What’s next?

We aren’t exactly sure what we’ll be able to give away to top these iPads, but we have some fun ideas in mind. Be sure to follow us on twitter for more opportunities to win awesome prizes, and to keep up with all the great new apps (and updates to old favorites) we have coming soon!
