The coolest thing anyone’s done with Camera+
Over the past months, we’ve seen people create some remarkable things with our app, but New York wedding photographer, Joshua Brown took it to a whole new level by publishing an entire book of breathtaking photos of his recent trip to Italy taken exclusively with Camera+.
I was really happy to see Joshua’s heavy usage of one of my favourite FXs, Contessa from our I ♥ Analog pack. The monochrome FX works really well with the Italian countryside and brings a nice cohesion to the group of photos.
We’re going to give away 5 copies of Joshua’s printed book. If you want the chance to be one of the lucky winners, simply tweet about this. We’ll pick the 5 winners randomly from everyone who enters. Good luck!

What’s the size of the printed pictures? They look awesome but originally they were 72dpi pictures… curious to know about the resizing and resampling procedures

@Emil H. We added an awesome new feature in the last update called Clarity which brings out all the details in your shots and livens up dull pictures similar to what HDR does.

@Andrea: don’t know where you got the idea that they’re 72dpi - when they’re in the camera’s sensor they’re packed in at about 10M dpi, and the output image is somewhere around 2000*2600 pixels.
You could get something like a 10” wide portrait shot at 200dpi printed.

Inspiring and yet again more amazing pictures from Camera+.
I rarely take my DSLR out now, let alone fiddle about with editing after. I get instant satisfying results straight out of the app…. like a pro!

Hey Everyone,
Thanks for the kind words. I have been taken off guard by all the emails and twitter love for my vacation photos
If you have any questions let me know, but to answer a couple of them…
They were all shot and processed with an iPhone 4. I actually went out there to shoot a wedding in Florence, so I had my 5D with me, but I really felt like I wanted to just relax and not haul a bunch of gear around all week. I did actually bring the 5D out a few times, but all the images that made it to the book were from the iPhone.
Almost all the images were underexposed slightly to retain highlight detail, then I used the Clarity scene to bring the shadow detail out, then I usually ended it with Contessa or Sunkissed depending whether I wanted BW or Color. I also tried to get a proper white balance, then locked it, since the iPhone skews towards cold most of the time.
Here are all the places you can find me online if you would like to keep in touch.

Hi Camera+ and Lisa:
I may be launching a website soon, by the end of summer. I have investment backing (plenty of it) and if the site goes live, I’d love to incorporate some type of cross-promotion for Camera+. Please email me; I believe dialogue could be mutually beneficial.
The third and fourth colorized pictures are beautiful and what interested me from first glance.

I did the same thing on a business trip to Australia and New Zealand this year. I wanted to cut the weight I was carrying to an absolute minimum, so camera at home and iPhone only. Camera+ made some great shots

Great job Josh, I’ve always said Camera+ is one of, if not the best camera app available for the iPhone and your wonderful book is further proof of that. Well done.

@chrisbtoo
Thanks for the explanation, now I get it. I must admit that I thought that Camera+ was somewhat downscaling the picture to apply the effects, which is what actually happens with Instagram, not Camera+.

Nothing new here. There are over 30 iPhone photo books that have come out in the past year alone that are spectacular. This seems like more of an advertisement for camera+, which doesn’t need the press because it is a great app and definitely deserving of the #1 spot for photography apps on the iPhone.

Thanks for sharing some of the process Joshua. How do you control the exposure Vs. the white balance? I’m not sure how you could do that independently with in Camera+ Am I missing something?
Joshua Brown
12:51pm, May 6, 2011
@Gdub
White balance is a little trickier. Once you tap to focus, then tap the plus to bring up the independent exposure control, there is a little WB lock button in the corner. When the iPhone is balancing it too cool, I actually just point it up at the sky, which forces the camera to warm up, then I lock the WB and come back to the subject. Kind of tough to explain, but hopefully that makes sense.

Like exNewt, myself and many others are doing similar projects on flickr. Mine is the iPhone’s take on the popular 365 project (a pic a day). I’d say only 2 or 3 of the shots I’ve posted to the group haven’t been shot from camera+. The only thing I wish is that it saved a copy of the original after editing.

My wife and I “eloped” to the Amalfi Coast a few years ago - seeing these photos brought up some pangs of nostalgia for me.
And, @dnrfleming, there’s an option in the prefs that lets you save the originals to your camera roll.

Joshua, an inspirational piece of work, superbly executed. You’ve truly confirmed my belief that the iPhone is spearheading a new direction in photography. However, let’s not forget that all the technology in the world can’t make you a great photographer - it’s still the person behind the camera that makes it all work. And in your case it works very well indeed.

Inspiring set of photos!
There’s a massive range of iPhone photo apps out there, so sifting through to find the good ones is hard work. But I wouldn’t be with out Camera+ - this collection is a testament to a great app and an excellent photographer!

I still can’t believe iPhone can do that! iPhone is now a serious consideration. I wonder if there’s a photo app with short depth of field.
