Fresh off the heels of our Camera+ 1.2.1 release, we’ve just submitted a new update to Apple for approval. Unlike our previous updates where they’ve included several new features and bug fixes, this update includes just one new feature. But it’s a big one.

Here are the release notes:

VolumeSnap ~ use your iPhone’s volume controls to snap photos!

Using Camera+ now feels just like a real camera. Your photos can be sharper because you can now hold your iPhone steadier with two hands instead of fumbling around for the shutter button on screen.

In addition, you can plug your iPhone earphones in and use the volume buttons on them as a remote shutter control.

Yes, we’ve added the very feature that got Camera+ 1.0 rejected by Apple. But we’re doing this with a bit of confidence that it’ll actually be accepted this time. After we discussed the VolumeSnap situation and asked you to tell Apple that you definitely want this awesome feature, many of you pointed out a bunch of apps in the App Store that actually have something similar.

So did Apple have a change of heart as a result? Hopefully, and we’ll soon see if this is really the case.

Beware that there’s absolutely no guarantee that this update will be approved and if VolumeSnap is something you really want in Camera+, then I advise you to hit-up Apple and keep the pressure on. It’d probably be a good idea to reference this blog post in your message. If it’s something you really want in the app, spread the word and encourage others to do so, too.

I’d like to point out that we were completely open about this with Apple this time and we pointed the past rejection out in the review notes. I’d also like to point out that the way we implemented VolumeSnap doesn’t rely on any private methods or functions, but does rely on something that’s not documented, along with some pretty clever engineering by Karl.

So hopefully Camera+ 1.3 soon gets Apple’s blessing and all of you can start snapping pics in a way that feels just like a real camera. We’ve been using the feature internally for several months and the one thing we will guarantee is that once you try it, you’ll never want to go back to the on-screen shutter button.

Wow! This will work on iPhone3G?

I’ve used their form and asked them to please allow apps to use the volume buttons for something other than volume, and included this post as a reference. Let’s hope they listen.

I sent in a form also. Even if it’s not approved with it, you should at least try on every point release, they gotta goof eventually!

Will it work with the volume buttons on my headphones?

    Keeping my fingers crossed.

Oh, read a little further :P The feature looks awesome, would love to see it in 1.3!

Nice work…hope it goes through.I’ve just written a blog past about camera+ that is going live tomorrow…might have to do a rewrite!

Also…can you add an ability to turn off the pre-flash of the flash? I’m wondering if the little flash could be used to trigger a BIG flash…..but that pre-flash is going to ruin my plans….

Good luck getting this approved, I think you’re going to need it :/

Good luck guys, this would be a great feature.

How about, instead of completely replacing the VolumeSnap icon with an iPhone 4 one, include the retro one and the new one, and change based on what device we’re on? ;)

Thank you so much. I’ve been waiting for this.

I’d like to see another great feature. A timer for the shutter. Because the iPhone 4 got no round edges we are able to put it on a table and take photos from ourselfes.

I really really hope it will be approved but you know Apple. anyway let’s think positive! ;]

    AWESOME news!!!

(patiently awaiting the option to bypass the DSLR on startup ;-) )

I agree with T-Will, starting the app straight into the camera would be outstanding. Good call dude.

I’ll send apple a email too, but I’m with T-Will hoping for a way to disable the dslr startup screen.

Sounds great, but Apple will never approve that. The volume buttons are designed for changing the volume, not taking photos. They’ll reject your app, which is a shame.

Is GPS & By-pass DSLR on start up (going straight to the camera) on the next feature list??

  21. Will

I think it would be cooler if they were used to zoom.

  22. Justin
    3:43pm, August 4, 2010

I hope this goes through. Volume snap and bypassing the DSLR on start up would be enough for me to replace the standard Camera app on my home screen.

Please add panoramic photos shoots like “Pano” app

I like your App. Hope it gets thru.bypassing dslr is a good idea.

Vers nice App at all.thx for this product. But there is one thing which is missing in my opinion: thr GEO tag isn’t saved with the image after exporting the image to the iPhone Camera Roll. I would be very happy if this Feature is Part of One of your next releases. Thx a lot.

I filled the form out, and let them know what we want! I really hope they listen because they’ve approved similar functioning apps before, and they are still available for download!

Golly, I sure hope this makes it in! Reading from the top of the entry, I thought, “This is the money shot! I’m gonna buy it right NOW!” Imagine my disappointment to learn that it may (probably) be rejected…

I’m gonna submit feedback to Apple right away! Good luck, guys!

This will make the app such a great deal. It already rocks but having an actual camera button would rock.

I really hope apple approve this feature. So many times have I have missed good photos because I had to reach for the shutter button and made the picture blurry.

This would be great so come on apple let the iPhone users have a feature that improves the phone’s awesome camera!!

The one thing I’ve disliked about using the camera on my iPhone has been the lack of a shutter button. Makes for some awkward death-grips trying to extend your arm out to get the perfect angle, but not being able to use both hands due to the positioning.

If Apple approves this feature, oh man. That would be awesome. That, and a DropBox sync that retains the EXIF and GPS data would be grand!

Skip dslr screen. Geo tag in next version please!

I think this is a great usability feature for the camera on the iPhone. In summary of my feedback to Apple on this, I also suggest to the developers. If you are changing the nature of a hardware control provide a warning to the user. Similar to the “flashlight” LED camera flash apps have to display a warning about battery life for accessing the flash in that manner. Let the user know the external volume controls have been hijacked and the condition when they will be returned to normal operation.

I can tell you I don’t use Camera+ now, but this feature is the point that would surely sell me on it. :) Good luck with the App approval.

Nice, but Exif & GPS data trump hardware buttons.

The great app Camera+ reminds me of fun of photograph, and I’m big fan of Camera+.
Upgrades & additional functions always amaze me!

Today, I posted following article, introducing Camera+ in Japanese, in my blog.

I hope next & future update will be successful and the Camera+ to be true “the ultimate photo app”in the world!

I noticed this feature in the promo movie, and it is the main reason I purchased camera+. I’m so excited to be able to take photos while holding the phone with one hand—the on-screen button is incredibly un-ergonomic. Please, Apple, don’t delay!

I think you now about Real-Camera (App Store Link:

This App is approved, why not Camera+?

Good luck with the App approval, this would be a great feature.

For those that are wondering…The camplus://enablevolumesnap patch works great! There just isn’t a menu option for it in 1.2.1 (like in the photo for 1.3). Hope that helps! ;)
