Camera+ second month sales: The Sophomore Software Slump?

by John Casasanta
August 10, 2010146 comments

For iPhone apps that have had relatively big launches, they typically have great sales the first month, but during the second month, sales tend to drop substantially. It makes sense when you think about it… in these cases, the buzz for the app mostly comes from the initial launch itself so after a nice run up the charts, they start to slide downward and settle down to a relatively stable sales rate that’s dramatically lower than the peak days.

This has definitely been the case with most of our apps. Here are the first two month sales for the last two apps we launched before Camera+:

Convert Voices
Month 1 $102,949 $205,000
Month 2 $33,424 $99,356

iPhone apps that’ve been pretty big hits for their first month tend to have somewhat of a “sophomore slump” for the second month. Of course this isn’t always the case… for example Angry Birds has pretty much been unstoppable since climbing to #1 (and its success is very well deserved because it’s truly a great game).

How did Camera+ do in its second month? If you’ve been following along, you saw that for our first month, we took in around $253,000. And based on our past apps, we were expecting sales to drop off to the point where we would’ve been pretty lucky to bring in another $100k or so for the second month.

Well, I’m really happy to say that the second month far exceeded our expectations and actually earned a bit more than the first month, coming in at a total of just over $254,000…

Camera+ month 2 sales

And here’s how the whole first two months looked…

Camera+ month 2 sales

So after two short months in the App Store, Camera+ has pulled in a whopping half a million dollars. Needless to say, we couldn’t be more pleased.

  • what it is: the ultimate photo app
  • number sold: 399,436
  • net sales: $507,221
  • more info: at the App Store

Why the rise instead of the fall this time? There are a number of things that happened during the month and while no one particular thing can be attributed to the big sales month, there’s no doubt that each contributed to the whole. In addition, the word of mouth in general for Camera+ has been fantastic overall and it’s undoubtedly been a major factor for the sustained sales.

Here are some of the more significant events that happened throughout the month. Each is indicated chronologically on the sales graph above so you can get an idea of how it possibly affected sales.

A App of the Week ends

Apple featured Camera+ as the “App of the Week” throughout most of Europe and several other places around the world. The point on the graph marks when the featuring ended and our subsequent drop in worldwide sales soon after.

B First month sales post

The twin sister to this post, born a month earlier. The post got a decent amount of media coverage and subsequently, started Camera+ on another climb up the charts.

C “What’s Hot” featuring US

Nobody except Apple knows exactly why apps are chosen for the various featurings. In this case, it’s possible that they noticed a lot of charting movement of Camera+ over the few days leading up to this.

D Touch Exposure teased

Lisa posted a video that quietly demonstrated the main feature that was going into version 1.2. Being such a cool feature that nobody else was doing, it caused a lot of buzz.

E 1.2 released

Continued buzz for the Touch Exposure feature since people could actually use it themselves now.

F Media reviews

A large concentration of high-profile media coverage. Right before version 1.2 was released, TUAW posted a very favorable review of Camera+. Once 1.2 hit the streets, we got a flood of stories, with some of the more notable sites being Macworld, MobileCrunch, and Wired.

G MacRumors forum post

There’s no better way of having the word of your product spread like when actual users are talking it up. Especially when it’s in a huge forum like the MacRumors ones. There’s no doubt that this forum thread helped things considerably. I noticed it when looking at our stats and saw that a ton of traffic was coming from it.

H 1.2.1 released

We addressed all of the major stability issues with version 1.2.1. While it wasn’t the kind of release that’d cause any buzz, it definitely went a long way in instilling confidence in our users. It’s a lot easier to recommend something to others when that something doesn’t crash or behave unpredictably.

I Creative Exposure video

Lisa created a more in-depth video showing how to get the most out of Touch Exposure and Touch Focus.

J VolumeSnap submitted

I posted about us submitting version 1.3 to Apple for review. This version was all about allowing users to snap photos using the volume buttons on their iPhone. It was rejected by Apple.

Hopefully Camera+ will be able to sustain these levels or at least something close to them for the long term. We have a lot of awesome things planned for it so it’s definitely a possibility. Thanks to all of you who’ve supported us by purchasing the app… and and extra thanks to those of you who’ve been spreading the word of it. We’re doing everything we can to try and make it the best possible photography app on the iPhone and we think you’ll be very pleased with all that’s coming up with it.

In the first month sales post I mentioned that we did no advertising at all for Camera+ and that didn’t change at all for month two. I also mentioned that if there was enough interest, I’d write a post about why advertising generally doesn’t work these days for low-cost iPhone apps. And because of the big response to that, I’ve been writing that very post and should have it up here soon.

One thing I’d like to leave you with is the following…

The phrase:

Build a better mousetrap, and the world will beat a path to your door.

…is bullshit. It’s more like:

Build a better mousetrap… and then blog and create videos about it and hope that the Mousetrap Store features it … and just maybe the world will beat a path to your door.

@Moira are you running iOS 4.0 (or 4.0.1)? because then you should be able to set custom exposure on your 3Gs

…the camera has to support it hardware wise (iPhone 3Gs and iPhone 4 do) as well as software wise (4.0 or higher)

Love it, recommend it, but have one feature request - a “direct to camera at launch” option in settings. Many times I end up using the iPhone camera app, because I need to get a shot *very* quickly. Thanks!

@Michael Reboot your device, if that doesn’t help… delete the app, reboot and then reinstall. You won’t be charged twice if you’re using the same iTunes account to recover the download.

Hey guys, one thing you may be forgetting which would certainly help second month sales is the fact the the iPhone 4 launched in an additional 13 countries and so all the people who just got their iPhone 4’s would now be purchasing the app. This is what happened with me and a large group of people I know so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was an additional contributing factor.

  14. Alex
    7:24pm, August 11, 2010

Great post. I wish more developers revealed information like this. It’s a great way to learn and get insight on what to expect.

That said, I have been waiting for an update to Voices with new voices for some time. Is one coming in the near future as was promised originally?

I also wanted to note that even though I can get the same books in Classics on iBooks, I still read Classics. You did an excellent job with that. A lot of those books are on college reading requirement lists. A great thing would be to see many of the books from college reading lists in Classics.

I tried buying camera+ just a few moments ago. Said the app wasn’t in the app store anymore. Rebooted phone. Now it says my demand cannot be completed at this time. Am I too late to hop on the fun?

I think the app as been pull from app store because of the ‘volume button# feature.

  19. Richard
    4:00am, August 12, 2010

Sales won’t be growing if the app isn’t for sale. I just checked and it’s been pulled from uk app store! It was number two photo app last might overtaking apple iMovie finally , but poof gone this morning. Links don’t work and nothing when searched. Nothing for tap tap tap even. What’s up?

  20. Lilly
    7:12am, August 12, 2010

Assuming you get the app back in the Store (fingers crossed!), I look forward to seeing an option to go straight to camera mode on startup. Also, GPS data saving. I know I’m not the only person who needs it!

  21. mare
    8:08am, August 12, 2010

The last time a developer pulled such a stunt *all* of its apps were deleted from the App Store… Let’s see if this pans out differently for a best-selling developer as you are.

  22. Rob
    9:23am, August 12, 2010

I was shocked to see Camera+ pulled from the store, although now I’m not surprised but it sounds like the stunt was someone else’s doing. I hope you and Apple can work this out and have it restored quickly. I look forward to a blog update!

  23. Jones
    12:43pm, August 12, 2010

Really sorry to hear about the Apple hammer crushing down on Camera+. Apparently we’re “imbecile users” who can’t customize our own phone.

Giz’s article hits some good points, and I think this is yet another case against iOS.

Make the move to Android! And, sell a version of Camera+ on the jailbreak store! We’re really going to need it when the new iPod Touch comes out.

  24. Dann
    2:01pm, August 12, 2010

I was really looking forward to the next version of Camera+ and might finally jailbreak my device, assuming this gets up on cydia

  25. Charlie
    2:14pm, August 12, 2010

Jones: Huh? “imbecile users”? I assume that you’re quoting Apple on that, where did they say it? This has nothing to do with you customising your phone. Apple had rules that clearly said that hiding a feature from the review process will result in the app being pulled from the App Store.

  26. Alan
    3:46pm, August 12, 2010

please add to cydia, i’m happy to purchase from them. apple is making Microsoft seem reasonable.

  28. T-Will
    4:08pm, August 12, 2010

Thanks for this great feature, I can’t believe Apple is being so controlling about this. Here is a great innovative feature and they go and stifle it. Unbelievable…

Luckily I got in on the previous version, so I won’t be updating any time soon.

  29. Rob
    6:21pm, August 12, 2010

so what’s taptaptap gonna do? Fight Apple about this?, call a lawyer?, offer to re-release the app without the “easter egg”?(would Apple believe them?) What are the chances this app will be back in the store by next week? If I were Apple I’d expedite this cause they themselves make some nice money off this app.
I wish taptaptap would post something here.

I can’t seem to get this app to my iPhone. I use to have it & I can’t find it at the app store. It was my favorite app so far. Can someone please help me.

  31. ErichD
    2:58am, August 13, 2010

I LOVE this app & the ability to use a volume button for picture taking! The problem I’ve had (since before volumesnap) is that the lightbox instantly crashes and sometimes causes my 3G to reboot.

I’m jailbroke (ultrasnowed), and eagerly awaiting a Cydia-certified Camera+ clonne!

  32. Samuel
    3:45am, August 13, 2010

No official word from taptaptap on this issue makes me wonder…

Maybe Apple decided to pull the app and include a rewritten version as the standard for the iPhone :)

  33. Kristian
    7:12am, August 13, 2010

If you get your app back to the store, please add the two following features—-without them the stock camera is (unfortunately) still my first choice.

#1: Option to start app in camera mode. When I start it, it’s because I want to snap something. *Now*.

#2: EXIF information!!! Seriously, no camera app can really mean business if they don’t save EXIF information like date/time of creation, location data, and the like. (Furthermore, storing your app as makerdata or some such in EXIF could be another way to advertise. It being displayed on flickr among other places.)

  34. Jay
    10:32am, August 13, 2010

@Kristian: Right now, no other camera app in the store, stores EXIF data. iOS2 & 3 did not allow it. iOS4 gives full access to the data, but as I understand it, not when saving to the camera roll… which is pointless, and stupid.

Camera+ holds onto the metadata when the photos remain in the lightbox. If you share the to Flickr and Twitter, the EXIF and GPS data gets sent along (and sharing to Flickr tags it as the uploader, while sharing to Twitter gives it a website, similar to TwitPic, yFrog, etc.) I have run into a bug, however. If you copy & paste a photo from within the lightbox (eg: to have the original as shot, and an edited version), the pasted photo’s time/date stamp changes to the time/date that you pasted it, while the GPS data remains intact.

The only real problem with leaving photos in the lightbox is the lack of any way to get them onto your computer for archival (iPhoto, Aperture, Lightroom, etc). I’m hoping they work out this issue with Apple, get the app back on the store, and hopefully sooner than later introduce a Share to DropBox feature that, like the Share to Flickr feature, will send the photos to DropBox with metadata intact, and I can access them on my computer and archive them in Aperture.

A work around for now, and quite a pain in the ass, would be to select all, Share to Flickr, and upload them as private images into their own set. Then use something like Bulkr to download them all at once from Flickr.

  35. Jason
    8:48pm, August 13, 2010

Wish you guys would tell is the scoop! In the meantime, I’ve been using ClearCam and I’m getting much clearer shots more consistently. And I don’t have to wait for the fancy graphics!

  36. Khürt L Williams
    7:51am, August 14, 2010

@Jay, The point @Kristian is making is that Camer+ does not keep the EXIF data and is less useful than the built in camera app. I have to agree and it does not matter if other camera apps don’t have this. It should be in the product.

Thanks for the workflow tip. I’ll take a look at Bulkr.

I had to do a hard reset at the Apple store for my iphone4, and NOW, I cannot restore your app nor can i download the app, even though I have paid Apple for the app, and I guess Apple paid you a percentage. Who is willing to stand up to the plate and help me get this app back? Thanks

  41. App dever
    8:38pm, August 14, 2010

So much for boasting about your app sales. So why not the silent now? You guys should be ashamed for making the app review process harder for devs, just like yelp with their Easter eye. So I do hope apple pull all your lame apps off the AppStore.

Love your app! Just wished it would save GPS data with the picture like the default camera app does. With the new location features of the built in album app it sucks that Camera+ doesn’t do this. Love the Volume snap easter egg feature!

  45. I Will Buy This App
    3:35am, August 16, 2010

Well, I just got SnapTap on Cydia. This app allows you to use the volume buttons to take a picture, as well as turn off the shutter noise.

  46. Samuel
    6:22am, August 16, 2010

Looks like taptaptap wen’t into silent-mode…

No blog updates for almost a week, that’s not a good sign!

  47. Rob
    8:32am, August 16, 2010

I wish we knew what’s going on, but I’m glad I already have this app and it’s still my go-to camera for now. I think Taptaptap knew what they were doing. I think they knew they’d be pulled. I think they were hoping getting pulled would cause a flurry of emails to Apple resulting in volume-snap getting approved. Personally, I’ve tried that feature and it’s certainly fun but not a deal-breaker if it went away.

  48. Josh Hofer
    11:03am, August 16, 2010

Boy-oh-boy you guys are definitely taking your time addressing why Camera+ was pulled and who pulled it…

  49. Brigg Thorp
    12:29pm, August 16, 2010

I saw on Gizmodo that because they snuck the ability to use the volumne buttons as the shutter into the software, Apple pulled it.

  50. Paul
    12:56pm, August 16, 2010

Yes Brigg, that is entirely plausible, but I (and others) wouldn’t put it bast taptaptap to pull it themselves - the fact is that neither Engadget nor any of us know for certain what happened - something that all of us want to hear.

The only two people that can officially say anything is Taptaptap and Apple. The problem is that neither of them have said anything.

  51. Rob Cameron
    4:04pm, August 16, 2010

Lisa hasn’t tweeted since the 11th! I’m sure she was getting a cut of Camera+ sales…wonder how she feels that some random devs just ruined a huge income stream for her.

  52. Paul
    11:25pm, August 16, 2010

Last I heard (on the TWiT network with Leo Laporte on Sunday), he (Leo) asked Lisa on the show to talk about this issue, but she declined mostly being unable to comment for whatever reason. The plot thickens…

  53. wideEyed
    12:35am, August 17, 2010

Some EXIF parameters change even in OSX Adobe apps when you edit or copy an image. I’ve found if you dig in far enough there is one item which keeps the original creation date of the image — not the ‘file’ which gets set as time you copy a file.

Can’t remember what the data key is and it isn’t exposed in some apps, I had to use photoshop to find it, whereas Adobe Bridge didn’t expose it.

  54. Jay
    2:28am, August 18, 2010

@Khürt: but it does maintain the exif. As long as the file remains in the lightbox. I agree, though, camera apps having the ability to save that data has been a constant source of frustration for me, and the only real stumbling block to me using other apps besides the default on for pictures. While it’s a pain, keeping pics in the lightbox with the occasional dump to Flickr an Bulkr downloads does at least work. I’ve done it myself a few times, and verified via Aperture and Photoshop that the metadata is preserved. At least the most pertinent stuff (time/date, location, camera model and shot info (shutter, iso, etc)). And it’s the only reason I have Camera+ on my dock, instead of the default camera app. If they ever get it back up, and make it easier in future updates to get this data onto my computer, I’ll be giddy.

@wideEyed: what you’re describing sounds like what happens when the metadata was stripped before getting the photo on your computer. It adopts the time/date that you copied it. If the apps didn’t strip the metadata, os x should not be altering without you forcing the alteration.

I feel bad for others who haven’t been able to download the app even though they paid for it.

I’m never buying taptaptap apps again. I really used to love your apps, but seriously, I’m done with this now. If you’re a new customer/reader, here’s why you shouldn’t buy their apps:

    1) POOR customer service. They NEVER reply back to your comments or emails.

    2) NO major updates after initial release. They always promise updates, but never release any. STILL waiting for Voices and Convert. It’s been over a year.

    3) They don’t have ANY business ethics. They launched Camera+ at $2.99 saying the price will go up, but after two weeks they lowered the price to $0.99. Now it’s being sold for $1.99.

All they care about is marketing and initial sales. That’s it.

  62. Flo
    3:02am, August 22, 2010

Loved the app even before the easter egg!

But the easter egg seems to have added a bug (iPhone 4, iOS4) because after switching apps and switching back to camera+ I tap the “take photos” option and it automatically snaps a picture without me doing anything.

I also got an enhancement request (if the app gets reapproved):
Please add touch focus (and if possible touch exposure) to the front-facing camera!

    Good luck btw!

  63. DD
    9:07pm, August 22, 2010

So… long time, no word from the developers or company. Good customer service would be to keep customers informed of whats going on. Bad customer service would be to clam up and not make a sound.

How a company handles a situation like this speaks volumes about how they view their customers.

Prove my sinking feeling wrong, guys.

  64. Casey
    10:51pm, August 22, 2010

Not defending taptaptap, but some of you (not all, but some) have a feeling of supreme entitlement because you spent up to $3 on an app. Ho-lee shit, a whole three dollars.

For those of you who can’t redownload the app, why in the world didn’t you sync your phone at any point in time so they’re, I don’t know, backed up on your computer?

Anyways, I love the app, hope you guys get thi issue resolved because I do believe you’re in the right here, even though you did break a rule. It’s not the default action to enable volume button shutter control, the user has to enable it, so there should be zero confusion here.

  65. Casey
    10:56pm, August 22, 2010

Another thing, Apple doesn’t (always) comment on app removals and the NDAs really forbid the developer on discussing the app store approval process, but we all know some people out there do.

  66. Dred242
    11:21pm, August 22, 2010

I found an app called PhotoInfo ($2.99 in the Apps Store) which could display or email all the EXIF data but only for images captured with the iPhone default camera. I loved using this app. I was able to download and install it before Apple pulled it from the U.S. store some time ago. It worked on my iPhone 3Gs up until I upgraded to iOS4. Now when I launch the app I get an error message that reads “”The operation couldn’t be completed (Cocoa error 257}” The amount of EXIF data stored in an iPhone image is unbelievable…….you’ve gotta see it! …link:

If Camera+ ever returns I would love to see something like this added.

I just realised that Convert app has not been updated for almost 1 freaking year! Last update was 29 Aug 2010!

Seemingly not available in Germany, iTunes store. You folk have plans to remedy this soon?

  69. Kris
    12:12pm, August 24, 2010

I used Camera+ all the time, but I’m getting an iPhone 4 tomorrow and have now seen that it has been removed from the app store due to a hidden feature. Despite this being apples stupid fault at being total control freaks… Please publish a new version without this feature so I can go back to the good old days… I won’t be able to use the built in camera app for very long as nothing compares to camera+

  70. Folle Rec
    12:58am, August 25, 2010

Good luck folks. Now that taptaptap has made the money it has made, even if Camera+ wasn’t pulled, they’d have stopped updating it from this point on. Look at Convert (last updated Aug 29, 2009) and Voices (last updated Nov 19, 2009). Enough said. Then after a bit, they’ll promise updates (version 2.0!) with great new features. Then nothing. Based on your “About” page, you have 6 programmers. You have 3 apps. Wow.

John Casasanta, again, thanks for calling me an idiot. I’ll never forget it.

  71. Paul
    9:46am, August 25, 2010

Kris: Apple posts rules and acts on them.. How is this their fault? TapTapTap deliberately broke the rules that they agreed to follow.

You can disagree with the rules all you want, but if you agree to abide by them, you cannot blame anybody but yourself.

  72. lilscottieme
    2:33pm, August 25, 2010

Kris: What I can gather is that TapTapTap submitted a new version of the app with the volume buttons acting as camera buttons. Apple refused the new submission because of that. The app was still available in the app store.

Then it got out on twitter (or somewhere else) that their was a hidden work around, so apple pulled the app from the store.

When apple refused the update then you can blame apple for being stubborn. But then for TapTapTap to allow this hidden feature to be placed in the app is stupid on their part.

I don’t know if legal stuff is going on and TapTapTap and lisa can not comment but it is poor communication.

  73. Nobidy...
    3:34am, August 26, 2010

First, Camera+ is a great app and I love to use it. But that taptaptap an Lisa didn’t give any comment to this situation makes a lot of us very sad, maybe angry. The only thing that can be is, that Apple bought the camera+ App an will release that as the standard camera app in iOS 5. So taptaptap get money for the app and money to be quiet…

  74. Paul
    8:35am, August 26, 2010

No, that is not the only thing it can be.. I can think of several reasons that TapTapTap has been silent. Ditto Lisa Bentley.

Right now we have to assume that Apple pulled the app due to a violation of the terms of development. That’s the most likely explanation and since TapTapTap’s other apps are still around, I’m guessing there hasn’t been any acquisition. I don’t think it wise to spread anything unfounded without hard proof.

It is troubling that we don’t have any public comment from anybody, but TapTapTap is beholden to nobody but themselves and have no obligation to respond to anybody if they don’t want to. I don’t know why they don’t talk up, but saying nothing implies nothing.

  75. DD
    11:50am, August 26, 2010

Continued silence. Even if under an NDA while working with Apple, they ought to still be able to say they’re listening and just can’t respond yet.

Unless something changes, never shall I send another penny in their direction. Camera+ is a nice app, but taptaptap is showing themselves to be a company to avoid.

smh i bet they feel super stupid. Im super mad they did that. i really love the app, I still got it but I wanted to see it on the ipad and more updates. you guys are super stupid to go around apple like that. if this whole thing is a story made up to cover up an acquisition, then hooray. either way I love the app and still use it. dont do anything stupid to calbot to get it pulled, i just purchased it.

  79. Paul
    12:53pm, August 30, 2010

James, if the company was out of business, all of the apps would have been pulled and the app web pages would have been shut down by now.

Someone from this thread contacted me about my comments on EXIF data apps for the iPhone. I’m so sorry, but I deleted your email address. Hopefully you will catch this post. If anyone is still looking for an iPhone app that can read all of the EXIF data embedded photos captured with the default iPhone camera, an app called Exif Wizard does just that. It was released Aug 25th 2010 and sells for $0.99 in the app store. Get it before Apple pulls it.

    Dear devs:

Crazy idea, but here it goes:

Fix the feature (or remove it) that is in violation of the rules, and …

Re-submit your app so you can continue making money from selling it.

It’s nonsensical to have the best camera app for the iPhone *not* on the App Store. Just because you’re devs who are very busy coding doesn’t mean you don’t have to have any business sense.

Your app is IN DEMAND. Helllloooo!!!! Fix it (it’s not a critical feature anyway) and re-submit *so others can continue buying it.*

Come on guys, shape up. Unless you don’t mind camera+ descending into obscurity and/or supplanted by another camera app that outdoes yours.

Some strange behaviour over on the App Store, here. I’m Canadian, and iTunes is telling me that the app isn’t available from the Canadian store. It does say that you are available from the US store. What gives?

And did you guys fix that problem with Apple removing your app from the App Store?

Whatever the case, good thing that I picked up my App early. I _love_ the volume shutter button feature.

  95. Rob
    10:36pm, September 6, 2010

Are TapTapTap waiting for people to flood Apple with complaint letters demanding its return? Is that not happening and now TTT are off pouting? C’mon guys, just drop it and come back. I’ve tried the volume snap feature and its ok but I’d rather you improve your stabilizer instead. What Camera+ needs is a major UI re-tuning. Right now its SO slow and sluggish I’ve been resorting to the default camera. You also need to improve your customer service. I and many others never receive replies to our emails. Not good business.

see I don’t get it. If it was all about grab the money and go they could’ve hung in there another couple of months and made a million and then had a million to party with. It doesn’t make sense. It must be lawyers that are telling them not to say anything. But their company is getting run into the ground over what…a volume button? Do you want to be right or do you want to have a business? Lisa Bettany’s credibility is affected by this too. I just feel sad about all this cause I loved Camera+. I still use it(even though its slow to power up) but the joy is gone.

    12:03pm, September 16, 2010

I’m very dissappointed to learn that the app has been removed even before I got a chance to try it out. I am even more surprised to find out that you stopped communicating with the world and being open about what is going on, something I believe even the president of the united states can find possible in 2010. The volume shutter feature means nothign to me personally, but I’d love to try all the other awesome features. If you won’t interact with the customers and leave the app dead in it’s tracks, those customers will just make the developers of hipstamatic and other apps even wealthier. Oh well, your loss in the end.

  112. Corey
    10:37pm, September 16, 2010

Honestly I am so annoyed with taptaptap right now - good product, zero support and zero updates from now on I guess.

These guys have become very rich from honest customers and have betrayed each and every one of us. Personally I am going to demand a refund from apple as my app violates apple’s terms of service - I suggest people do the same :)

  115. Jack Shurack
    10:50am, September 17, 2010

Just contact apple for a refund, state that there is no obvious means for upgrades, and it’s a breech of the contract. They’ll do it.

  116. Rob
    4:25pm, September 17, 2010

It can’t be a take-the-money-and-run thing cause they could be making even more money right now. That would be stupid.
When a developer gets an app removed are they forbidden to talk about it for a certain amount of time? If we can’t reach TTT would there be someone at Apple who might know something? Personally I don’t care about .99 or even 2.99. I care about this app being reinstated.

  117. godbout
    5:19am, September 18, 2010

Same here. I had the chance to not lose the app and I still use it every single day. It is awesome. And I don’t get it, just by removing the volume snapshot taptaptap could still make a lot of money out of it, at least. Maybe Apple did buy it and is gonna make it its official app (don’t think so though, too complicated for lambda users) or maybe taptaptap is developing for Android? But weird being non-talkative for so long.

  119. miko
    12:02pm, September 19, 2010

I guess Apple is not willing to place it back even without the volume shutter feature. Must be a message to the other developers ‘don’t fuck with us’.

  120. Mr. T
    4:58pm, September 20, 2010

I think this situation is probably best explained in taptaptap’s own words in the blog entry that directly (and ironically) preceded this one:

“Some of you pointed out other camera apps that make use of the volume buttons for snapping photos. But Apple suspects that these slipped through the review cracks because the developers intentionally hid the feature from their app descriptions and screenshots upon submission, but then added info about them after their apps got approved. When Apple finds out about these incidents, they tend to crack down pretty hard on them, sometimes going so far as completely banning the developers from the App Store. So this is definitely not the smart way to go.”

This is just ridiculous. I’m with Zee on this one: supporting companies that scam their customers is a bad thing, as sets a president for others.

  128. Ianos
    9:43am, September 27, 2010

  129. John M. Hammer
    9:08am, September 28, 2010

What’s with all the comments about ripoffs and stealing and so forth? Their app got pulled, and they’re probably involved in a lawsuit that prevents them from commenting. They should be able to say, “Sorry, we have to suspend communications with our customers and community until this is resolved,” but… Still, the number and intensity of invective-filled accusations are really over the top.

That said, I’d love to spend my two bucks on Camera+ and I am hoping it will show up in the App Store soon. Some of TapTapTap’s other apps look good, too, but I’ll keep my powder dry until they make some noise here to prove they’re still alive.

  130. Erik

This company is confounding… Their erratic absolute silence with occassional vague response business tactics are so frustrating… Have they now disabled comments on this site? I don’t see a post dated after Mid March…

For one month now, when importing photos to my lightbox and committing various edits, the photos cannot be saved to my camera roll and every time this scenario provokes a terrible “please wait… Updating library” progress bar…. Have emailed the developers from the app store, from this website and in direct response to a vague email I received from a “Gary” with their team weeks ago and have had absolutely no customer support or even acknowledgment since…. WTF?

After I got my iPad 2 I was ever so excited to start using it’s robust processing speed and memory to edit my LARGE photo library with clarity! And now I’m left with an almost USELESS app on my iPhone, no response from the developers, and me scratching my spinning head trying to figure out why….

It gives me great pleasure to let you know that Camera+ has received the ultimate accolade from Tap! – we’ve included it in our definitive list of the 100 Greatest Apps of All Time.

You’ll find a toolkit of graphics and more at that you’re welcome to use in promoting the app online.

Your app and its 99 peers are featured in the issue of Tap! that goes on sale today – in the UK as a printed magazine, and worldwide in our Zinio and brand new iPad app edition.

We’re very proud of our new app edition. We built the platform ourselves, and each issue is actually put together on an iPad, taking advantage of all the iPad’s native abilities such as giving reader the option of using VoiceOver to read the live text aloud. (And it was, of course, an interesting experience being on the other side of the app approval fence!)

You can get a feel for how the app looks in our video tour at, or in the grabs of the live issue on the App Store.

Sorry, I got a bit distracted there. If you want to know more about our new platform, let me know, but the big news for Camera+ today is its inclusion in our list of the best 100 apps.

Tap!’s mission is to make it easy for the millions of iOS users to find the best apps and games for their devices, and while we unearth gems from the vast heaps of rubbish on the App Store every issue, apps such as Camera+ absolutely set the standard, and epitomise everything that’s wonderful about iOS.

So thanks for all your hard work on it. We know, and not just because we’ve just gone through the process ourselves with our app edition, how much talent, hard work and passion go into making an app good enough to be named as one of our 100 best. Congratulations. And we can’t wait to see what you do next!
